NYFW Fall 2023
9/8/23
We got to NYFW guys!
It's only been 10 months into my sewing journey, and I've had the honor of creating my first runway collection for NYFW. I'm blessed to have gotten a small foot in the door in less than a year, and I'm excited and determined to show my progress moving forward.
The Runway
Muva Nature
This outfit was inspired by the impact of my entrance into this world within my family. I was born with sickle cell anemia, and my mom used to tell me that because of my situation she pushed herself to further her education to become a doctor. I wanted to honor the beauty of the cards that were dealt. When we’re born, we don’t know what comes from the life we’re about to deal with, but in my lifetime i’ve found comfort in the things I can’t change while improving what I can. Muva nature represents the beauty of being human.
The Princess
Since I was young my family, especially my mom, used to call me princess. It is one of the first forms of affirmation I’ve ever recognized. Because of how often they called me princess, I wanted to carry myself better than my situation. That nickname was my first sense of self worth when I was young, and it not helps me realize how powerful words of affirmation are. What you tell yourself, the name given to you, and how you treat others are all pillars of self worth in my eyes. If my family affirm me I wouldn’t have recognized what self assurance looked like, nor could I provide that to others. The Princess represents the younger me that tried to think the best of herself and her situations despite the atmosphere. The Princess represents the seed of of my self love.
The Scholar
This one represents my time in grade school. I took in a lot from that time of my life because I moved a lot. Like if you knew me in grade school you’ll know I moved EVERYWHERE 😭. At the time I hated it, but looking back, seeing different locations always reminded me that there’s more out there in this life. Often times we don’t grow/feel trapped simply because we’ve been in the same environment for so long, our time has clearly expired, but the comfort keeps us. I never got the chance to be too comfortable in grade school, but it taught be focus, tolerance, to stay open minded, and to use your resources. The Scholar reminds me that most of your education is from life itself, not necessarily just attending school.
The Viper
This concept is based off of moments in high school that took me by surprise. Moments that left me questioning things I believed in. Given the name, I made sure the material resembled snake skin. When I think of snakes, I usually associate them with bad things, and I still do don’t get be wrong, but snakes also shed skin. During high school I had to experience to enable me to leave some old beliefs about myself and the world around me behind.
The Admin
Concept was based on when I first started college. I was a biology major, and I nearly failed out of that. Shout out to nursing and pre-med students cause that’s not for me, you guys are built different. Anyways, from switching I’ve to architecture I started to understand that at the college level, your future is really up to you, and I don’t mean it in terms of doing well academically, but when you decide what’s for you and what’s not for you. The trajectory change is what threw me into design and then fashion design. The added years was worth it to me, but I didn’t want to wait until after school for my life to start because I’m stubborn lol. Going pursuing two careers at once is a lot, but it’s something I do not regret. The Admin reminds me that bold leaps are worth it.
The Matrix
This is probably one of my favorite ones because it’s very abstract. Not just the idea, but the construction. There was not a tutorial on how to execute what I was trying to do, so I had to wing it. I was so scared, but this one ended up being the easiest technique for me. This concept is based off the many many emotions I experienced when I got to adulthood. The push and pulls, ups and downs, and everything in between lol. I was so scattered during this time of my life due to unresolved trauma, new challenges, and all that great stuff, so when I drew out the top I wanted it to look like a square was split into 3. Anywho, the fabric is denim, and I thought it would be fun to make the panels resemble jeans instead of just making them plain. The Matrix reminds me that life’s a b!tch but she’s my b!tch 🤷🏾♀️.
The Diva
Also one of my favs because of the fur shawl!! This concept represents me growing into my own in my recent years. When I designed this dress I was thinking of Beyoncé’s - Diva. “A Diva is a female version of a hustler”, and it resonates! I had to understand that being kind and being nice are two different things, and I’m definitely not nice. I’m not going to put up with things that disturb my peace and my headspace, so yes I will block, yes I will say what’s on my chest, and no I’m not being “difficult”. If having a backbone and being willing to be my best advocate makes me b!tchy or a “Diva”.. well let me at least look the part first! When women, especially black women, go after things that matter to them and they have the AUDACITY to speak up… omgg!! The boogeywoman!! The Diva reminds me that if I’m going to be the villain in anyone’s story, I’ll be your favorite villain and look the part too!
The Boss
I loved this concept a lot. Although it’s very simple, I more-so focused on the fabrics being cohesive. Finding a nice blend between 3 fabrics was tricky, but when I found them I was so giddy lol. It was named the boss because I always think about who I need to be for my future. The fabrics working together paralleled to how I would love to blend with different people I work with! For example, the model for this outfit is quite literally a BOSS. At the show we shared our stories, and when I tell you she’s got big things ahead.. PHEW. I love meeting women I can look up to! I also love meeting other creatives because the energy always clicks!
Customs
I'm excited to show and add to the variety of custom orders I've done!
